The perfect shipping contraption, as envisioned by Spolsky

December 18th, 2005 · No Comments

Joel Spolsky is one of my favorite writers on programming and general technology. A former Microsoft manager, Spolsky writes clearly and deftly about many subjects.

Spolsky’s recent article on building a better shipping contraption to fulfill orders for his company’s products is a good example of specializing to meet a need in your business. Spolsky tried “all-in-one” shipping approaches, and found that building his operation out of off-the-shelf specialized pieces greatly improved the efficiency of his shipping.

More important that that simple gain, he also re-made the process so that even his least skilled employees could complete it. Simplify the operation by making the most difficult procedure of the process easier, and you make the whole process easier. Thanks Joel!
